Animated Gif (241K)
This animation shows results from a transient simulation of dead oil
displacement of a deepwater multiphase flowline in the pressure -
temperature plane. This operation was carried out in order to displace
the live fluids from the flowline before they cooled into the hydrate
envelope. The hydrate curve for this particular fluid is also shown
in the animation. The dead oil is at 40°C and flowline sections filled
with dead oil are shown in black, green sections are live fluids.
The animation shows that though the live fluids can drop to as low
as 10°C, they are consistently >5°C away from the hydrate envelope.
Hydrate formation requires water, light hydrocarbon, low temperatures
and high pressures. Though dead oil displacement may not remove all
of the water, it does remove the light hydrocarbons and heats the
flowline, making it a relatively robust hydrate avoidance strategy.
