Fluid flow tools
for the oil and gas industry have advanced in leaps and bounds over
the past few years, they are easier and quicker to use than ever
before and allow anyone to build complex models. However, good simulation
software on its own is insufficient, this needs to be looked up
by knowledgeable engineers. On this point, the quote from Bernard
Avishai is perhaps appropriate:-
The
real danger from computers is not that they will eventually get
as smart as men, but we will meanwhile agree to meet them halfway!
Bernard Avishai
Accurate simulations
and understanding can only come from the use of a wide range of
simulation tools by people with good experience of their use and
a detailed understanding of their foundation.
FEESA offers a wide range of simulation services, including:
- Steady State Pipeline Analysis; full experience
with industry standard steady state network simulators such as
PIPESIM and Pipephase for wide scan parametric studies gaining
first pass understanding of the major sensitivities of the delivery
system.
- Transient
Pipeline Simulation; using simulators such as OLGA2000
combined with novel analytical techniques to gain understanding
of the operability of a pipeline or gathering network.
- Integrated Reservoir Modelling; Life of Field transient
modelling with the use of PIPESIM-FPT, gaining further insight
into the system by removing the artificial barrier between reservoir
and pipeline simulators.
- Economic
Optimisation; the use of standard economic methods
combined with novel Integrated Reservoir Modelling techniques
to optimise project value. For example, the choice of pipeline
diameter is a trade off of ullage and CAPEX. Integrated Reservoir
Modelling can be used to trade incremental revenues against the
incremental CAPEX associated with increasing the pipeline size
thus arriving at an optimal design.
- Computational Fluid Dynamics; detailed numerical analysis
software for studying fluid flow and heat transfer in complex
two or three dimensional geometries. Though computationally expensive,
such methods are sometimes the only way to reliably design subsea
equipment, flowline bundles, riser towers etc.
- Specialist
Studies; bespoke models to solve specific engineering
problems drawing upon knowledge of the fundamentals and the published
literature. Examples include sand transportation and erosion and
the development of a hydraulic model for an unusual non-Newtonian
fluid.
